Revealing the unseen, inspiring the future
We’re capturing Western Port as it’s never been seen before using world-class cinematography, cutting-edge tech and storytelling that dives deep. This landmark documentary is the beating heart of the campaign, uncovering the secrets of our underwater world to spark awe, understanding, encourage exploration and lasting protection.
Hidden along Victoria’s rugged coastline is a hidden realm where land, sea, and sky converge in a breathtaking tapestry of life - Western Port. A rich wonderland shaped by mighty currents, great tidal surges and ancient drowned riverbeds. The result is a mosaic of marine habitats and life, some found nowhere else in the world.
This world-first blue-chip natural documentary is set to showcase the incredible natural wonders of the marine life of Western Port like never before, guided by the ancient voices of mangroves that provide a critical connection between the sunlit shores with mysterious marine depths below.
At low tide their snorkel-like roots burst from the nutrient rich mudflats and are blanketed by thousands of avian flyers, some international that feast on the bounty here along with armies of marching soldier crabs and extraordinary fish that can survive out of water while they battle for breeding territory.
As the tide rises, life retreats and the mangroves, the only trees capable of surviving in seawater, are swallowed up by the incoming waters from the Southern Ocean and a new, vibrant and unique world comes to life.
It’s here we witness how some of the oceans' smallest animals, sponges and bryozoans create the most vibrant gardens and enormous reefs that are found nowhere else on the planet. Together they’ve become a sanctuary for otherworldly creatures. Psychedelic sea slugs who steal the weapons from the food they eat, dragons fashioned with fins, charismatic marine mammals and eight-armed giants eight with two extra hearts.
This extraordinary diversity is all interconnected, dependent on each other, all united by the struggle to survive in a rapidly changing world faced with urban expansion, pollution and climate change that are disrupting the balance of this fragile ecosystem.
While we have a front row view of new life being created and hope in the form of elephant sharks emerging from their protective egg cases, it’s here we see how this delicate ecosystem is fighting against impacts of human kind. While rakali the native water rat and kelp gulls battle invasive sea urchins and mangroves and seagrasses absorb the impacts of a warming planet, we become acutely aware that nature has its limits and the future remains uncertain. The magnitude of speed of human impacts is outpacing its ability to adapt and Western Port needs our help.
More than a visual celebration of this hidden wonderland, this documentary is also a call to action—a reminder that the health of these ecosystems is intricately intertwined with our own. Healthy communities need healthy environments. Western Port Down Under will explore the beauty and fragility of this remarkable and unique underwater wonderland and our role in protecting it for generations to come.
